Over 50s in action
June 19, 2017ECB Over 50’s County Championship –
Leicestershire (Away) 25 th May
After the disappointment of having the first match at Bedfordshire being postponed due to heavy rain, the Over 50’s travelled to Hinckley Town to take on 2016 Champions Leicestershire. Suffolk won the toss and asked the Home X1 to bat. Try as they might, Suffolk’s bowlers could not dislodge the two openers, Tim Moult (102) and Ian Cox (45) as they amassed a partnership of 162 from the first 30 overs.
From then on, it as the Raja Hyatt show as he smashed 117 off 54 balls before being caught by Pallant on the final ball of the 45 th and last over of the innings. He had ridden his luck somewhat as he had survived two dropped catches much to the bowler’s frustration. There were two wickets apiece for Cooper and Underwood but Howe returned the best figures, 0-30 as he bowled his full 9 over spell at the start of the innings. Leicestershire had set Suffolk an imposing target of 307-4 to chase.
Suffolk’s hopes of chasing down the target suffered an early blow when captain, Wormington was bowled for just a single in just the 3 rd over. Cooper (21) and Squire (30) got the innings moving before Pallant (57) and Hurrell (52) added their half centuries. When Hurrell was 6th man out with the score on 174, it left a nigh on impossible 134 to win off the final 10 overs. Edwards (35 not out) got Suffolk to within a respectable distance, 239-9, at the conclusion of the innings but were left to rue those dropped catches.
Hunts (Home) 31 st May
Suffolk returned to winning ways the following week with a comfortable win over Hunts at Mildenhall. The Hunts top order were completely blown away by Sean Cooper, 1-11 from 6 overs and Dean Sykes, 3-20 from 9 overs. Reeling at 56-5 with half their overs gone, Hunts were never going to get close to Suffolk’s 226-5. Perhaps the Hunt’s batsmen just ate too much of the splendid tea provided by our hosts. Batting at no5, A Anthony, 69, brought about some respectability to their scorecard as further wickets were lost. P Waughman’s 25 at the death helped Hunts up to 162 to leave the visitors 64 runs shy of the Suffolk total.
Earlier, Sean Cooper had opened the Suffolk innings with a breezy 53 containing 10 boundaries. Former skipper, Tony Stubbs, was the mainstay of the innings as he shared partnerships of 66 with Paul Pallant (27) and 43 with wicketkeeper, Andy Leech (17). At the conclusion of the 45 overs, Stubbs had scored an unbeaten 76 from 107 deliveries.
