Hames leads Suffolk Over-70s to Vase victory
September 3, 2021NEIL Hames struck a superb 128 not out to steer Suffolk Over-70s to the National Vase title.
Suffolk thrashed Leicestershire by seven wickets in the final held at Kidderminster CC on Thursday.
Leicestershire elected to bat and totalled 245 for 5 in their 45 overs on a glorious ground with a good wicket and very fast outfield.
All the Suffolk bowlers performed very well and were backed by some magnificent ground fielding from all the team.
Alan Burt took 2 for 52, with Hames, Peter Webb and Peter Christie picking up one wicket apiece in their nine overs each.
Suffolk were quietly confident at the tea interval, though when David Adams (16) and Ray Black (9) departed with the score only on 52, Leicestershire appeared to be in the driving seat.
Then a match-winning stand of 151 between Neil Hames and Rob Jenkin (57 off 72 balls with four fours and two sixes) put Suffolk in a strong position.
Hames, with the help of Peter Boughton, who made an unbeaten 16 not out at a run-a-ball, saw Suffolk home with three overs to spare. Hames ended on 128 not out from 130 deliveries laced with 21 fours.
Barry Briscoe, the National Organiser, presented the trophy and the individual medals and said what a magnificent advert for Over-70s cricket the match had been.
He also presented an individual award to Suffolk captain Chris Watson as the match marked the occasion of his 100th Over-70 Championship match – the first player in the history of the competition to achieve the feat.
