Honours about even after day one

September 5, 2021

HONOURS ended about even on the opening day of Suffolk’s National Counties Cricket Association Championship Play-Off Final against Oxfordshire.

After winning the toss at Tring Park CC in Hertfordshire and putting their opponents into bat, Suffolk dismissed Oxfordshire for 248 off 81.1 overs.

Six Suffolk bowlers picked up at least one wicket, with Joe Gatting striking twice after lunch following a morning session in which Suffolk failed to make more use of the conditions.

Skipper Jack Beaumont finished with 3 for 39, while a brilliant piece of fielding by Josh Cantrell off his own bowling ran out Oliver Currill. Cantrell is pictured above being congratulated by his team-mates.

Beaumont was then superbly caught and bowled low down for 21 in Suffolk’s reply, while Kyran Young fell leg before as they reached 57 for 2.

An absorbing day’s play ended with the teams coming off because the sun was shining too brightly behind the bowler’s arm at one end, retuning for two overs and then coming off again!
