Ex-international star coaching Suffolk

February 20, 2024

FORMER South African international Nicky Boje has been assisting Suffolk with their pre-season preparations.

The 50-year-old, who has been head of cricket at Ipswich School for the past five years, has been taking coaching sessions ahead of Suffolk’s 2024 NCCA campaign.

Boje, who played 43 Tests and 115 one-day internationals for the Proteas, has been leading sessions at the school’s indoor cricket gallery along with new head coach Adam Mansfield.

Boje (pictured above) said: “I have previously coached a couple of the players individually, but I know Adam quite well through him working at Orwell Park School and me being at Ipswich School, and it is great that he has seen an opportunity for me to help out wherever I can.”

Boje, whose son Nico plays for Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC in the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League, has been working with the men’s 1st and 2nd XI squads, on Thursday evenings.

He said: “The main goal for me is to give the players something that can improve them individually, and that individual can then take that into the team so that it can have an impact and they can be successful.”

Boje, who played county cricket for both Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire where he had a spell as captain, has so far been working with the batting line-up.

However, he said he is also planning to spend some time with the spin bowlers.

He added: “It has been really good so far. I don’t see all the players all the time, but I am concentrating on making sure the time I spend with them is beneficial to them.”

Suffolk head coach Adam Mansfield said: “I am absolutely delighted to have Nicky on board coaching with us.

“To have someone of his knowledge and experience within the county, we had to try and take advantage of it, and thankfully, he agreed to help.“His technical knowledge is brilliant, and he’s making a real impact with the players he’s able to work with.

“On a personal level, I am striving to learn as much from his sessions as the players are. I’d like to place on record my thanks to Nicky, and I really hope he can give the players that extra boost for when the season starts.”
