Jones to make debut as Rhodes returns

May 9, 2024

SUDBURY’S Adam Jones will make his Suffolk debut in Sunday’s NCCA Trophy match versus Staffordshire at Mildenhall CC.

The 23-year-old top-order bat and left-arm medium bowler has been called up for the opening Group 2 game at Wamil Way, start 11am.

Jones is joined in the Suffolk side by former Worcestershire and Leicestershire all-rounder George Rhodes, who returns as Suffolk’s professional after missing the T20 group games.

Ben Parker, who scored 131 runs across last weekend’s two T20 double-headers versus Norfolk and Lincolnshire, is looking forward to welcoming Rhodes back for Suffolk’s NCCA Trophy campaign.

He said: “The 50-over format suits us a bit better. We have done well in previous years, so hopefully we can put some better performances in.

“Having George back will make a huge difference. It lifts everyone having someone like him in the team. It will be good to have him back.”

As well as Rhodes and Jones, who joined Sudbury in the winter after a stand-out season at East Bergholt, Raj Singh will make his first appearance of the season.

The Copdock & Old Ipswichian bowler claimed five wickets on his Suffolk debut in last season’s 13-run victory over Norfolk in the NCCA Championship at Horsford CC.

Jack Beaumont returns after missing Monday’s matches against Norfolk at Ipswich School, with Josh Wells, Tom Rash, Tom Harper and Freddie Heldreich all dropping out.

Suffolk, who reached the semi-finals of last season’s NCCA Trophy competition before losing to Cumbria by four wickets at Sudbury CC, have been handed a tough start this time around against Staffordshire.

The visitors qualified by the Super 12s stage of the T20 competition, but only after it emerged that Northumberland infringed the rules by playing two former professionals in Jacques Du Toit and Stuart Poynter.

Both have played more than 40 games across first-class and List A fixtures, with counties only permitted to field one player in any match whose combined tally of appearances across the two formats exceeds that figure.

Suffolk face away matches versus Shropshire and Herefordshire either side of entertaining Norfolk at Sudbury CC on June 16th.

Suffolk squad: Adam Jones, Alex Maynard, Darren Ironside, George Rhodes, Ben Parker, Jack Beaumont, Josh Cantrell (capt), Jacob Marston (wkt), Dan Shanks, Mark Smith, Raj Singh. 12th man: Ned Overbury.

George Rhodes is pictured batting versus Northumberland in the quarter-finals of last season’s NCCA Trophy competition at Sudbury CC. Stuart Poynter is the Northumberland wicket-keeper.
