Rain the winner in Women’s opener
April 16, 2025SUFFOLK Women were thwarted by the wet weather in their opening fixture of the season – a T20 friendly versus Cambridgeshire.
After restricting their opponents to 146 for 8 at the Victory Ground in Bury St Edmunds on Sunday, the match was abandoned due to rain before Suffolk could start their reply.
After a successful winter training programme under new coach Johan de Silva, the women were all very enthused to get outside and put their training into practise.
Lara Neild (pictured above) led the team and after winning the toss decided to field first. The side made their way onto the pitch in their smart new playing kit, sponsored by JLS Catering.
The bowling attack performed well to restrict Cambridgeshire to 146 for 8, with the wickets spread amongst six different bowlers which highlights the depth of the squad.
One of those wicket-takers was newcomer Zaynah Rehman, who has made a positive impact on the bowling attack with her left arm leg spin.
Tamsin Holmes, who has played all the way through the county age groups, also claimed one of the eight wickets on her Women’s debut!
Not only was the bowling good, the whole team’s fielding looked very sharp with two run outs.
Unfortunately, Suffolk were unable to go out and bat after the innings break due to rain. However, there was confidence amongst the team in their ability to chase down their target.
Everyone in the Suffolk Women’s set-up is excited for the new season, starting in Oxfordshire on Sunday in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
