Wareing returns to Suffolk line-up

MATT Wareing will return to the Suffolk side for Sunday’s NCCA Trophy quarter-final tie way to Cambridgeshire.

Wareing, who has been in fine form with the ball for Suffolk so far this season, was unavailable for the 36-run loss to Shropshire at Mildenhall CC.

He comes back into the starting XI at the expense of Tom Rash, with Alex Maynard (pictured above) travelling as the 12th man for the 50-overs-a-side contest at Burwell & Exning CC, start 11am.

After winning their opening two Group 2 games away to Norfolk and Staffordshire, Suffolk lost at home to both Herefordshire and Shropshire to finish group runners-up behind the latter.

Suffolk head coach Adam Mansfield said: “We started fantastically well with two great wins, but we’ve not been at our best in the last two games and deserved to lose. However, we are still through and that’s all in the past now.”

A trip to Exning can almost be considered a home match as the ground is in Suffolk and the county used to play matches there in this competition. Therefore, the short journey will be welcome following Saturday’s round of club matches.

“Travelling on a Saturday night is always difficult for everyone. We have won our away games so far this season, so hopefully we can continue that.

“I played a lot of Suffolk 2nd XI fixtures there growing up, so it’s always nice to go back. The pitch is usually good and I hope there will be good support for both teams on Sunday,” said Mansfield.

It was, of course, against the same opponents, at the same venue and the same stage of the competition that Suffolk’s NCCA Trophy campaign came to a shuddering halt last season.

After dismissing their hosts for 186 to give themselves a great chance to advance to the semi-final, Suffolk were skittled out for just 101.

“We bowled well that day and batted poorly. We know what Cambridgeshire will bring and I hope the players are right up for the battle on Sunday,” said Mansfield.

Suffolk: Jack Beaumont, Ollie Burle, Darren Ironside, George Rhodes, Alex Oxley, Adam Jones, Josh Cantrell (capt), Jacob Marston (wkt), Tom Harper, Dan Shanks, Matt Wareing. 12th man: Alex Maynard.
