Girls record six-wicket win

SUFFOLK won their ECB Girls’ U18 County One Day Championship Group 7 fixture at Hertfordshire by six wickets.

As temperatures touched 29 degrees, Suffolk won the toss and elected to bowl at Cokenach Cricket Club on Saturday.

Despite fielding only nine players, one of whom was carrying an injury, Suffolk bowled out Hertfordshire for 195 off 35.1 overs.

Izzy Gebhard and Erin Berry opened the bowling and restricted Hertfordshire to only five runs off the first five overs with Gebhard picking up the wicket of opener O’Toole for two.

Imogen Grove replaced Gebhard while Berry continued at the other end, taking two wickets in the 10th over and narrowly missing a hat-trick despite what looked like a very good lbw shout.

Suffolk then turned to spin at both ends, with Laila Hollis taking a wicket in her first and second over. Callie Bradbury, unable to bowl her usual seam due to injury, instead turned her hand to off spin, and restricted Hertfordshire to 22 runs off her five overs.

Grace John and Gebhard replaced the spinners, with John taking a wicket in her second over and Gebhard adding two further wickets to her haul. Then Hollis came back to finish off the Hertfordshire innings.

Given Suffolk only had nine players, captain Megan Haynes marshalled the team very intelligently in the field, making it as hard as possible for Hertfordshire to score ‘easy runs’ in their innings.

Chasing a target of 196, Charlotte Anderson and Erin Berry got Suffolk off to a rapid start with 22 runs scored by the end of the third over.

Berry then fell for 12 and Hettie Thorogood joined Anderson, building a partnership of 51. Thorogood fell for 17; captain Haynes then came in, scoring 26 off 25 balls in a partnership of 65 with Anderson.

Hollis arrived at the crease with the score at 142 for 3 off 22 overs but before any further runs were scored, Anderson was caught for an excellent 72.

Grace John joined Hollis and their partnership of 67 (Hollis 22 and John 26) saw Suffolk to victory at 199 for 4 off 34.2 overs.
