Suffolk qualify for Super 12s

July 6, 2025

SUFFOLK have qualified for the NCCA T20 competition Super 12s for the first time.

The first match of Sunday’s double-header versus Hertfordshire at West Herts CC in Watford on Sunday was abandoned, with the second match cancelled due to the wet weather.

After being put into bat by their hosts in match one, Suffolk had posted 154 for 6 thanks to a third-wicket stand of 114 between Adam Jones and Kieran Pell.

They came together with the score on 23 for 2 off 3.5 overs and were separated 13.4 overs later when Pell was stumped for 52 off 37 balls after striking six fours and one six.

Jones ended undefeated on 62 from 54 after also scoring six fours and a six to take his tally to 285 runs from seven innings in the group stage.

Hertfordshire faced one Arafat Bhuiyan over, which yielded six runs, before heavy rain intervened and the players were not able to get back on.

Suffolk, who effectively needed to win one of their two remaining Group 2 games to qualify, progressed to the Super 12s after receiving one point from each match.

Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk all finished on 10 points, but Cambridgeshire topped Group 2 on net run-rate from Norfolk, with Suffolk third.

Cambridgeshire leapfrogged into first spot after winning away to Norfolk by 71 runs and eight wickets – the exact same two margins that Suffolk lost by against Norfolk a week earlier at Woolpit CC.

It means that Cambridgeshire and the three other groups winners – Berkshire, Cornwall and Staffordshire – will have home advantage at the Super 12s stage.

Suffolk will be away to one of those (although not Cambridgeshire who they beat twice in Group 2) along with one of the other qualifiers on Sunday, August 3rd.

Pell (pictured batting above) said afterwards: “It was a shame we couldn’t get back on, especially after a good start to the game, but that’s cricket, isn’t it?

“The general feeling was we were probably 25 above par at least on a tricky wicket out there, so I think we did well to fight to a scrappy 150-odd.

“We were feeling pretty comfortable to be fair and then one over in after an okay first over the rain came and there’s not much else you can do, I suppose.”
