David is stepping down

DAVID Armes is stepping down after 25 years of producing the Suffolk Cricket Handbook.

The 76-year-old first oversaw the handbook, which is widely regarded as the best among the National Counties, for the millennium edition in 2000.

This year’s handbook was his 26th and final edition as designer of the 76-page handbook, which has been printed in full colour since 2015.

David, who co-owned Riverside Press in Ipswich, was asked to get involved by new editor Martin White, with whom he produced the next 11 handbooks.

He said: “When I left Riverside Press I carried on doing the layout of the handbook and they continued to print it for a few more years, before we switched to Five Castles, who have been incredible.

“Our deadline each year was to have the handbook ready so that former Suffolk Chairman Norman Atkins could take it with him to the Minor Counties meeting at the start of the season.

“Norman was always very proud to hand out Suffolk’s handbook to the other counties, and we only ever missed the deadline once for technical reasons.”

Nick Garnham took over from Martin White as editor in 2011 and has worked in tandem with David, who was living in France throughout that time until recently returning to England.

David added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed producing and developing the handbook as well as the other things I have been involved with during my time with Suffolk Cricket and I can look back and reflect that I had a good time.

“I have met some lovely people and the handbooks is something that I am very proud of, and I hope that it continues for many more years to come.”
