Jacob appointed as vice-captain

JACOB Marston has been appointed as the new vice-captain of Suffolk’s Men’s 1st XI across all formats for the 2026 season.

Marston (pictured above) will be vice-captain to red-ball captain Jack Beaumont and Josh Cantrell in both white-ball formats.

He made his Suffolk debut in 2019, taking eight catching and making one stumping in the Unicorns Championship versus Northumberland at Bury St Edmunds.

Feroze Khushi, who replaces George Rhodes as Suffolk’s professional this season, also made his debut in that match, scoring an undefeated 120 in the second innings as Suffolk won by six wickets.

Marston played as a batsman only in the 2021 National Counties Championship play-off final versus Oxfordshire at Tring Park, top-scoring with 61 in Suffolk’s second innings as they lost by 178 runs.

The 25-year-old, who is the current captain of Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC, has been almost ever-present in the Suffolk side since, and was pushed up the order last season to open in T20 matches.

Suffolk Men’s 1st XI head coach Adam Mansfield said: “Last season we didn’t have a formally designated vice-captain across all formats; it tended to be shared or situational depending on availability.

“The decision to appoint Jacob was based on his consistency, experience within the group, and the respect he has from the players and staff.

“He brings strong leadership qualities, good communication, and a calm presence on the field. He’s someone who leads by example and understands the standards we expect.”

Mansfield, who captained Suffolk and simultaneously kept wicket, is confident Ipswich-born Marston, who attended St Joseph’s College in the town, can manage his increased workload.

“Absolutely, as a wicketkeeper myself, I understand the demands, but Jacob is more than capable of handling both roles. He’s very organised and has a good cricket brain, which helps him manage the dual responsibility,” he said.

Suffolk have been having regular net sessions at St Joseph’s College alongside the under-18 squad since January as they step up their preparation for the 2026 season.

Mansfield added: “Looking ahead, we know we’ve lost some key players, including Adam Jones, but the group is shaping up well.

“There’s a good balance to the squad, and we’re confident we can be competitive across all formats this season.”
