‘Super-important’ weekend for Suffolk
April 30, 2026MEN’S 1st XI head coach Adam Mansfield said this weekend is ‘super-important’ as Suffolk start their NV Play One Day Trophy campaign.
Suffolk face Cheshire at Toft CC on Sunday before travelling to Furness CC to meet Cumbria on Bank Holiday Monday, with both Group One matches starting at 11am.
What was billed as an Essex 2nd XI but turned out to be their Under-18 side, were brushed aside as Suffolk won by 112 runs in a warm-up friendly at Ipswich CC last Sunday.
Suffolk scored 312 for 8 off their 50 overs, with new professional Feroze Khushi top-scoring with 66, while Ollie Burle (56), Darren Ironside (48), Ishaan Rakesh (45) and Kieran Pell (32) were all among the runs.
Essex U18s were dismissed for 200 in reply, Jack Auld claiming figures of 5-0-18-3 and off spinners Darren Ironside 5-0-16-2 and Ollie Burle 5-0-27-2.
Mansfield said: “I was really pleased with how we played on Sunday. It was nice to get the group back together and get off to a winning start.
“This weekend is super-important. If we can get two wins that puts our season on the front foot.
“Obviously it is going to be tough for the lads playing for their club sides on Saturday, then travelling to Cheshire and playing and then going on to Cumbria, playing again and then coming home.
“There will be a lot of tired bodies when they go back to work on Tuesday!”
Khushi is not available for the double-header due to recent a family bereavement, Matt Wareing and Tom Harper are both injured, Dan Shanks is unavailable and Alex Oxley is still overseas.
Ex-Kent bowler Arafat Bhuiyan, who played for Suffolk in last season’s NCCA T20 competition, is included in the squad as is Archie Jones, who scored a century for Bury St Edmunds last Saturday in the East Anglian Premier League.
“We have named a squad of 12 for both days and will see what conditions are like and how people pull up after playing on the Saturday and the Sunday, it just gives us a few options,” said Mansfield.
