Suffolk aim to build white-ball momentum

CAPTAIN Josh Cantrell is aiming for his Suffolk Men’s 1st XI side to finish their NCCA NV Play One Day Trophy campaign on a high.

An unchanged Suffolk side entertain Cambridgeshire in their final Group One match of the 50-overs-a-side format at Mildenhall CC on Sunday, start 11am.

Neither side can qualify for the knock-out stages of this season’s competition, despite Suffolk defeating Shropshire by seven wickets at Sudbury CC last Sunday.

Cumbria joined Cheshire in booking their quarter-final berth thanks to a 47-run victory over Cambridgeshire at Burwell & Exning CC.

Cantrell said: “It was very pleasing to get the first win of our white-ball campaign. I thought we bowled well based on the conditions.

“The seamers bowled enough good balls in the right area on that pitch and at Sudbury in particular. I thought James Bridges was fantastic and gave us real impetus throughout.

“I was pleased with the calmness shown in the chase and we coasted home in the end.”

With the Dojo NCCA T20 competition starting in a fortnight’s time, ironically away to Cambridgeshire, Cantrell said it was vital to build on Sunday’s victory.

“Absolutely. It is important to build momentum for the rest of our white-ball campaign and it’s always nice to beat Cambridgeshire!”

With Cambridgeshire expected to include players from Mildenhall whose Darren Ironside (pictured above) will be in the Suffolk side, Cantrell is expecting there to be an even better atmosphere than usual at Wamil Way.

“I think so, we may even be treated like the away side! We enjoy playing at Mildenhall as a county, it’s always good fun!” he said.

Cantrell said that in some respects it is easier to plan for the match knowing the majority of the visitors’ team through regularly playing against them in the AVL East Anglian Premier League.

“We know their batters well and will have certain plans that have worked in the past, but at the same time we will need to be adaptive based on conditions and match-ups,” he added.

Suffolk: Jack Beaumont, Feroze Khushi, Ollie Burle, Darren Ironside, Alex Oxley, Josh Cantrell (capt), Freddie Heldreich, Jacob Marston, Freddie Cloud, Dan Shanks, James Bridges. 12th man: Archie Jones.
