A GIRLS’ tournament and Watch Party to celebrate the start of the Women’s T20 World Cup has been hailed as a ‘massive success’ by organisers.

Around 300 people attended the event at Walsham-le-Willows Cricket Club on Friday evening held to coincide with the start of this summer’s tournament in this country.

The four-team U12 tournament was contested by hosts Walsham-le-Willows, Melton-St Audry’s, Mildenhall and Woolpit, with Melton-St Audry’s coming out on top after winning all three matches.

During and after the tournament players and their families were able to watch England’s 87-run victory over Sri Lanka on the big screen at the club’s Summer Road ground.

Ned Campbell, who is Vice Chair of Walsham-le-Willows Sports Club, organised the event. He said: “Girls’ cricket has been the winner tonight.

“The first Walsham Festival has been a massive success and made even better by England doing the business versus Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.”

Walsham-le-Willows CC joined All Stars in 2017 and now have 55 children on the All Stars (5-8-year-olds) and Dynamos (8-11-year-olds) programmes.

With up to 30 playing hard-ball cricket plus around ten girls, the family-orientated club is a hive of activity on Friday evenings in the summer.

Ned’s two sons were umpiring, while one of cricket club chair James French’s two daughters who play cricket was helping to run the tournament.

James said: “We were talking about what we could do to put on an event at the club and decided to run a tournament and Watch Party to mark the start of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

“It’s lovely to see so many families here enjoying the occasion.”

The big screen was erected on the front of the clubhouse at Walsham during the football season at a total cost of more than £20,000.

The club received funding from the ECB and Suffolk Cricket towards the screen, which is now used as a scoreboard on match days for both cricket and football.
