Froggatt called up for opener

July 10, 2026

LUKE Froggatt has been called-up for his first Suffolk appearance in almost three years.

The Copdock & Old Ipswichian all-rounder will play in the opening Men’s 1st XI match in the NCCA Cluberly Championship against Northumberland.

Suffolk begin their three-day Eastern Division One campaign at the Victory Ground, home to Bury St Edmunds CC, against their newly-promoted visitors on Sunday, start 11am.

Froggatt (pictured above) made his Suffolk debut versus Norfolk at Woolpit CC in the NCCA Championship in July 2022 and featured in the following three-day fixture away to Staffordshire.

In between, he also played in the NCCA Trophy Quarter-Final loss versus Oxfordshire at Banbury CC and the Showcase match against Kent Spitfires at Woolpit CC.

After appearing in two T20 friendlies against Bedfordshire at Bury St Edmunds CC at the start of 2023, Froggatt’s last appearance in a Suffolk shirt came on his home ground against champions-elect Buckinghamshire in August of that year.

All-rounder Josh Cantrell and seamer Dan Shanks are both unavailable, so Froggatt is included in a three-man pace attack.

He joins Chris Steele, who returns to the Championship side after playing last season, and James Bridges, who will make his debut in the three-day format after impressing in the NCCA Trophy.

Head coach Adam Mansfield said: “We felt we needed another seamer and Luke Froggatt has done well in the East Anglian Premier League this season. He also adds depth to our batting.

“It is great to have Chris Steele back playing with us this year and also James Bridges back after he missed the T20s as we felt as a fast bowler he needed a break. Hopefully they will bowl well together.”

Suffolk have not won their opening Championship match since crushing Cambridgeshire by 329 runs at the Victory Ground in 2021, the year they last won the Eastern Division title.

They have since lost to Lincolnshire by eight wickets in 2022, Staffordshire by 51 runs in 2023 and Buckinghamshire by 119 runs last season, drawing away to Buckinghamshire in 2024.

“We have started slowly in previous years, but we have been playing a lot of cricket recently, so there is no reason why we can’t change that and start well this year,” said Mansfield.

Suffolk squad: Jack Beaumont (capt), Ollie Burle, Darren Ironside, Feroze Khushi, Alex Oxley, Jacob Marston (wkt), Freddie Heldreich, Tom Harper, Luke Froggatt, James Bridges, Chris Steele. 12th man: Ishaan Rakesh.
