Big weekend awaits for Woolpit CC

July 14, 2026

WOOLPIT CC have a big double date on Sunday!

The Men’s side are just two wins from Lord’s in the Cawston Press Village Cup, while the Women’s side play in the Regional Final of the ECB Vitality Women’s Club T20 competition.

More than 440 sides entered this season’s National Village Cup competition and the West Suffolk club have reached the quarter-finals for the second time in three seasons.

They now face a home tie in the last eight of the 40-overs-a-side competition at their Rectory Lane ground versus Surrey side Blackheath on Sunday, start 1pm.

Woolpit have beaten Stradbroke, Bentley from Essex and Worlington before being the only side to win away from home in the last 16 at Chorleywood in Hertfordshire. Woolpit’s George Tilbrook is pictured bowling in their 45-run win at Chorleywood.

Woolpit captain Merlin Stamper said: “It’s such a pleasure for the club, players and supporters to make it to the quarter finals of the National Village Cup.

“The team has played so well up to this point and it’s very special to see that seven members of the team have come up through the Woolpit Youth system.

“It’s a welcome relief to be at home at this stage considering this is our first scheduled home match of the competition. It will be a great day with many supporters from the club, the opposition and also hopefully a few enjoyers of cricket in general.

“Woolpit have made a great effort with food and beverages for the day and we really look forward to hosting.”

Woolpit have reached the national rounds of the competition five times in the last six seasons, losing in the last 16 last season to Kent side Leeds & Broomfield by 18 runs in a rain-affected match.

The year before they lost by 67 runs to eventual winners Foxton Granta, who have won the competition in each of the last two seasons, but they will meet new opponents this weekend.

“Blackheath will be a new face for us, we are yet to compete against one another in this competition, so both teams will be going into this game with great anticipation.

“It would be extraordinary for us to make it through to the semi-finals. We were unfortunately knocked out by Foxton Granta in the quarter-finals two years ago, so making it this far is not unfamiliar, but we are definitely prepared to go all the way to Lord’s.

“The club would be thrilled with making it to the semis and it would show all the hard work that many members of the club make,” added Stamper.

Meanwhile, Woolpit Women’s first team host Dorridge in the Group 2 final of the Vitality Women’s Club T20 competition on Sunday, start 1.30pm.

Suffolk all-rounder Amelie Clarke struck a century off 52 balls – her second T20 ton of the season – to defeat a strong Bishop’s Stortford side by 21 runs in the last round.

Marcus West, who is the head of Woolpit’s cricket committee, said: “This will be our fourth game in the competition and we are looking forward to welcoming Dorridge CC on Sunday.

“The club are immensely proud of the Women’s section for getting this far and in general for the progress made after a challenging 2025.”
