A STAND of 161 between Callie Bradbury and Evie Tassell set Suffolk on their way to a 69-run defeat of Hertfordshire in Group 4 of the ECB Girls’ U18 County One Day Cup.

The pair came together at 73 for 3 with Suffolk in danger of wasting a good start after winning the toss and electing to bat at Bury St Edmunds CC.

Openers Charlotte Anderson and Lilly Gray built a 50-run partnership before Anderson was caught behind for 21, and Hettie Thorogood fell two balls later, also to Emilia Allen.

After Gray was dismissed for 40 in the 15th over, captain Bradbury joined Tassell at the crease.

They stayed together until the 37th over when Tassell was out for a magnificent 86, falling lbw to Eva Cullen, with Suffolk in the driving seat at 234 for 4.

Hattie Prentice and Bradbury added a further 23 runs before Bradbury was bowled for 81.

Henrietta Croot and Prentice kept the pressure on the Herts bowlers, adding 38, before Cullen struck again to remove Prentice for 30.

Croot and Livvy Swallow then pushed the Suffolk score to 316 for 7, with Croot finishing 27 not out. The scoreboard at the end of Suffolk’s innings is pictured above.

Ismene Johnson and Tassell opened the bowling for Suffolk and restricted the Herts openers to just 14 runs from their first four overs, before Johnson struck in the fifth over to dismiss Olivia Rolls.

Johnson then took two wickets in two balls in the seventh over, first removing Maddalena Silenti thanks to a great catch by Bradbury, then bowling Amy Mitchell.

Tassell then added to Herts woes as Martha Roberts was caught by Anderson to leave Herts 28 for 4, before bowling Kara Vijender for a duck as Herts slumped to 34 for 5 in the 10th over.

Cullen and Zoe Bovaird began the recovery as the pair built a partnership of 113 before Bovaird was out for 40 thanks to another remarkable catch by Bradbury off the bowling of Grace Newman.

Cullen, joined by Jenna-May Botha, continued to add to the Herts total until the returning Johnson bowled her for 74.

Botha alongside Freya Lilliott-Wilson tried to push Herts towards their target, but Johnson struck again, taking an excellent caught and bowled to remove Botha for 41.

That completed a splendid five-wicket haul for Johnson, who finished with figures of 10-0-62-5.

Bradbury then brought Anderson out of bowling retirement, and with the final ball of her fourth over she took the wicket of Abby Tomlin, thanks to another catch by Bradbury.

Tassell fittingly completed the Herts innings by bowling Lilliott-Wilson for 29 to take her third wicket and finish with figures of 7-0-38-3 as the visitors were 247 all out.
