‘Massive’ for Suffolk if they qualify

SKIPPER Jacob Marston says it will be ‘massive’ for Suffolk Men’s 1st XI if they can qualify for the NCCA Dojo T20 Finals Day for the first time.

Suffolk reached the Super 12s stage for the first time last season, and on Sunday head back to Wargrave CC, where an understrength side lost to both Berkshire and Dorset at the same stage a year ago.

Under the new format introduced this season, Suffolk will face Cornwall in the morning eliminator at 11am, with the winners then meeting hosts Berkshire in the afternoon at 3pm.

Marston said: “We are really excited. We go into it with a lot of confidence as we played really well in the group stages of the T20 this year.

“I think we can also take quite a lot of confidence from the Super 12s last year, although not doing as well as we wanted, but we now know what the day’s like and we have been to the ground before.

“We have got that experience and I am really hoping we can go one better this year and qualify for Finals Day.”

It will be the first time that Suffolk have played Cornwall, who finished second in their group, in a competitive fixture, and Marston admitted he knows little about their opponents.

“To be perfectly honest, I haven’t started doing my research yet, so I don’t know much about Cornwall. I haven’t personally ever played against them, so we don’t know too much about Cornwall yet, so it will be interesting to have a look this week and get the stats pack and then go from there,” he said.

Should Suffolk get past Cornwall, reigning NCCA NV Play One Day Trophy winners Berkshire lie in wait to see who will progress to this season’s Finals Day at Wormsley on Sunday, August 30th.

Asked if Berkshire playing on one of their home grounds gave them an advantage or Suffolk having played earlier in the day would give them the edge, Marston replied: “I don’t think it gives them a massive advantage.

“It’s not like they will have a massive home crowd in or anything. We have played two games there already, so it is a ground we are familiar with.

“They are very strong opposition, but if we go and win that first game anything can happen in that (second) game and it gives us the best chance to go two from two and get to the Finals Day.”

And should Suffolk do that for the first time, Marston said: “I think it would be massive for the county.

“Traditionally, our strong suit has been the three-day, longer format of the game, but in the last couple of years there has been a great turnaround to get our T20 stronger, and I think it would mean a lot to the county to get to that Finals Day.”

Suffolk are hopeful that Feroze Khushi, who missed the thee-day NCCA Cluberly Championship match at Buckinghamshire earlier in the week with a bad back, will be fit to return. Khushi is pictured batting above during his century against Lincolnshire at Hadleigh CC in this season’s competition.
