Honours end even versus Herts

HONOURS ended even between Suffolk Girls’ U18s and their Hertfordshire counterparts in their ECB Vitality T20 Group 6 fixtures.

Hertfordshire won the opening match on Monday at Ipswich School by five wickets, before Suffolk claimed their second by a seven-wicket margin.

After Hertfordshire won the toss and elected to field in the first match, Suffolk openers Lilly Gray and Evie Tassell built a 43-run partnership at over a run a ball before Tassell was caught behind by Lucy Bell off the bowling of Catherine Clune for 20.

Izzy Gebhard came in at No.3 and added 19 runs with Gray before Gray was out bowled by Chloe Eayrs for 20.

Suffolk then lost wickets at a far too regular rate and struggled their way to an under par 104 for 8 off their 20 overs.

In the Herts’ reply, Erin Berry had Edie Stanley caught by Grace Newman in the third over, before Tassell then struck in the next over to remove Amy Mitchell, caught behind by Darcy Durrant.

Berry added to Hertfordshire woes by bowling Eayrs for nine to reduce the visitors to 28 for 3.

However, Jenna-May Botha and Susannah Reader calmed the visiting team’s nerves by adding 23 runs before Kira Trimby bowled Botha for 11.

Reader was joined by Maddalena Silenti, who got Hertfordshire to 100 runs before Callie Bradbury removed Silenti for 13, once again expertly caught behind by Durrant.

Suffolk failed to make another breakthrough, Reader finishing 46 not out as Hertfordshire got to their target off 16.5 overs.

Hertfordshire again won the toss in the second match, but this time chose to bat first.

The Hertfordshire openers got off to a strong start, scoring 19 runs off the first two overs before Berry bowled Silenti in the third over.

Opener Emily Barnes and Lucy Bell added 51 runs off just 26 balls before Megan Haynes took the wicket of Bell, caught behind by Callie Bradbury, who was wicket-keeping for the first 10 overs of this game.

Haynes struck two balls later to dismiss Zoe Bovaird for 0 caught by Darcy Durrant to leave Hertfordshire 75 for 3 from just seven overs.

Barnes continued to punish the Suffolk bowlers, adding a further 38 runs with Catherine Clune until Gebhard removed Barnes for 62 off 39 balls, caught by Molly Talbot.

Gebhard struck again in the 13th over to take the wicket of Botha, caught by Trimby for 11 to make Hertfordshire 124 for 5 from 13 overs. In the next over, Newman had Clune caught by the safe hands of Durrant for 13.

Haynes took her third wicket by removing Reader to reduce Hertfordshire to 150 for 7. Bradbury then bowled Abbey Tomlin with the final ball of the 18th over.

Hertfordshire added a further 21 runs to finish their 20 overs with a commanding total of 179 for 8.

Gray and Tassell opened the batting once again for Suffolk and, seemingly undaunted by the target, hit 39 off 30 balls before Clune bowled Gray for 17.

Berry joined Tassell and put on 62 runs from 45 balls before Berry was caught off the bowling of Eayrs for 20.

Haynes was in at No.4 and with together with Tassell pushed Suffolk to 131 before Tassell was out for a superb 60, stumped by Bell off the bowling of Abbey Tomlin.

Captain Bradbury (20 off 9) then joined Haynes (32 off 19) as the pair smashed a 50-run partnership off just 19 balls to see Suffolk successfully chase down the target with an over to spare. Haynes (left) and Bradbury (right) are pictured above running between the wickets.
