More celebrations at Mildenhall CC

MILDENHALL CC have had plenty to celebrate so far in their 150th year – and there is still more to come.

The club are gearing up for a busy end to the season, starting with the 150 Cup – a 6-a-side competition taking place this Sunday from 10am. This will involve teams from Mildenhall CC, Kennett FC, Mundford CC and a Spectators VI.

On the same day the Ladies 2nd XI play in the morning on the second pitch at Wamil Way, where they will be celebrating winning the Two Counties Championship Women’s T20 Division 3B, and the Sunday side will be in action in the afternoon.

On Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st the club will be staging a Bowl-a-thon, with the plan to have at least someone bowling during the timeframe from 11am-5pm

During that time the club will be recording how many balls are delivered to see ‘how far we can bowl’ – the number of deliveries x 22 yards.

There will also be some challenges during the day including a 1-stump knock-out and 6-stump Royal Rumble.

On Saturday, October 10th the club will be holding the 150 President’s Meal at the Riverside Hotel, where Tony Cornell will be giving his President’s Award, arguably the most prestigious award of the season, which it is given for contributions to the club.

These events follow on from the Hall of Fame in April, when a new wall mural was unveiled detailing the names of 750 players who have represented the club in senior cricket (the criteria was a minimum of 3 games) since records have been collected.

This was followed by MCC v MCC – Mildenhall Cricket Club v Marylebone CC – and the annual Sausage & Cider Fest, both in the month of May.

The club are also currently raising £5,000 to help contribute to the refurbishment of their cricket nets and to support two charities this season: The Tom Youngs Foundation and the MPS Society.

Club Chairman Lou Handy said: “The club is proud of its long heritage and this has been cemented by President Tony Cornell by his passion for the club for over 50 years.

“The Tony Cornell Heritage Room was the spark in recent times which included the collection of all manner of memorabilia but perhaps best exemplified by the collating of the full set of playing records.  The historical run-scorers and wicket-takers are inspiring players to reach goals to go down in club history.

“On the pitch, the 1st XI have exemplified the club spirit by staying in the hunt for a first East Anglian Premier League title; perhaps we have lost a game or two we would like back but we are still fighting at the sharp end with four games to go so we take one game at a time and see where we end up.

“Regardless of their final position, the guys have competed well and we have seen like likes of Matt Allen blossom and Ben Cross and Liam Ticehurst given a taste of EAPL cricket.”
