SYC party depart for Sri Lanka
February 18, 2022A PARTY of Suffolk Young Cricketers will spend the next ten days on a tour of Sri Lanka.
The 18 boys and three coaching staff left Suffolk on Friday afternoon for the first ever overseas tour organised by SYC.
The tour was originally scheduled for last year, but had to be shelved due to Covid-19.
The tour party includes a combination of under-13s up to under-16s, with one under-12.
Suffolk Cricket Performance Lead Andy Northcote, who is leading the tour, said it has been set up as a training camp as this will have the best chance to impact on the boys’ cricket.
They will also play three matches each involving two T20 fixtures against club and representative sides.
These will take place at the Test match venues of Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. There will also be time set aside for sightseeing opportunities.
The tour, which has been funded by the boys’ parents, Suffolk Cricket Board and sponsorship from the Magnus Group, whose CEO Olly Magnus will be joining his son on the tour.
Assisting Northcote in running the tour will be Suffolk Cricket Senior Development Officer Andrew Blanchard, who will be match manager, and Chris Gange, who will oversee training. Javed Inam will be the health care professional.
Northcote said: “This is going to be such a fantastic opportunity for the boys for both their cricket and as a life experience. Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country filled with gentle people, wonderful wildlife and sensational food.
“The boys will be spending their mornings training and the afternoons exploring for ten days – what more could they want!”
